# Day trips from Vanuatu

> Vanuatu's regional air network is genuinely broken right now and this dominates the whole picture. Air Vanuatu (the flag carrier) collapsed into liquidation in May 2024; liquidation formally ended in October 2024 and the government-owned successor has since rebuilt a LIMITED domestic-only network (ATR72-600 plus one DHC6 Twin Otter) with zero international routes as of mid-2026 — its only jet was repossessed and it has not restarted Fiji/Australia/NZ services. The one international link that still works from Port Vila is a twice-weekly Air Calédonie/Aircalin codeshare to Nouméa (~1h05-1h35, ATR72/A320neo) — but the rotation pattern (aircraft arrives Port Vila mid-afternoon, returns to Nouméa the same evening, only ~2x/week) means it is NOT usable for a same-day return; Nouméa is realistically a one-overnight trip at best, flagged as such below. Within Vanuatu, Efate is home turf (excluded). Tanna (Mt Yasur volcano, ~45 min flight) genuinely CAN be done as a day trip, but only via private charter day-tour operators (Air Taxi Vanuatu, Unity Airlines, Belair) running dedicated out-and-back aircraft — Air Vanuatu's own scheduled VLI-TAH-VLI turnaround gives just ~40 minutes on the ground, nowhere near enough to reach the volcano. Santo/Luganville (~50 min flight) is the one destination where Air Vanuatu's own published schedule (verified 09-Mar-2026 timetable) gives a genuinely workable ~7-hour same-day window (Mon/Tue/Wed/Fri/Sat) — no Thursday or Sunday service. Ambrym's excellent cluster of kastom/black-magic festivals (Fanla, Bolumo, Tumburine, Nalawan etc.) is dated and real but structurally inaccessible as a day trip: the scheduled flight to Craig Cove gives only ~10 minutes' ground time.

- **Mt Yasur Volcano Day Tour, Tanna** — Tanna (Whitegrass/Lenakel area and Mt Yasur), Tafea Province, VU · Every day, on demand, year round (weather/ash-alert permitting) · ~45-60 min flight each way (private charter aircraft); ~1-1.5h road transfer each way between Tanna's airstrip and the volcano each way
One of the most accessible active volcanoes on Earth - you can stand at the crater rim at dusk watching Strombolian eruptions, and it's the only place within reach of Port Vila where a day trip delivers a genuine bucket-list experience despite the collapsed domestic network
Getting there: Private charter day-tour package (not a scheduled ticket) with Air Taxi Vanuatu, Unity Airlines or Belair Airways: pickup from Port Vila resort ~0715, check-in 0800, charter flight takeoff 0900, land Tanna ~1000, 4x4/road transfer to Mt Yasur ~1130, picnic lunch, depart volcano ~1315, back at Tanna airport by ~1445, flight departs, land Port Vila ~1545, resort drop-off ~1630

- **Santo day trip: Blue Holes, Champagne Beach & Million Dollar Point** — Luganville & around, Espiritu Santo, Sanma Province, VU · Any Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday or Saturday, year round · ~50 min flight each way each way
The only genuinely comfortable same-day return left in Vanuatu's domestic network since Air Vanuatu's collapse - turquoise limestone blue holes, WWII wreck diving/snorkelling and jungle caves, with real hours to enjoy them rather than a rushed turnaround
Getting there: Scheduled Air Vanuatu flight NF300 Port Vila-Santo, departs 0730 lands Pekoa (Luganville) airport 0820; return NF307 Santo-Port Vila departs 1530 lands 1620 (verified on Air Vanuatu's official domestic schedule, effective 09 Mar 2026). Hire a car/taxi at Pekoa for Matevulu/Nanda Blue Holes, Champagne Beach, Millennium Cave or a Million Dollar Point/SS President Coolidge wreck snorkel

- **Fête Nationale (Bastille Day) military parade & fireworks** — Place des Cocotiers, Nouméa, New Caledonia, NC · 2026-07-14 · ~1h05-1h35 flight each way
French Bastille Day done properly - military parade through central Nouméa followed by fireworks over the bay - a taste of mainland France a short hop from Vanuatu, if you're willing to treat it as a proper (short) trip rather than a day out
Getting there: FLAGGED ONE-OVERNIGHT, NOT A DAY TRIP: Air Calédonie/Aircalin codeshare flight Port Vila-Nouméa (La Tontouta), ~1h05-1h35, only ~2x per week. The rotation typically has the aircraft arriving Port Vila mid-afternoon from Nouméa and departing back to Nouméa the same evening - there is no morning-out/evening-back pairing for a Port Vila resident

- **Marathon International de Nouvelle-Calédonie (Marathon Mobil)** — Hippodrome Henry Milliard, Nouméa, New Caledonia, NC · 2026-08-30 · ~1h05-1h35 flight each way
Full marathon, half-marathon and 10km (Tokuyama) options along Nouméa's turquoise lagoon - a genuine regional sport fixture, just not a day trip from Port Vila given the current flight frequency
Getting there: FLAGGED ONE-OVERNIGHT, NOT A DAY TRIP: same Air Calédonie/Aircalin Port Vila-Nouméa codeshare (~1h05-1h35, ~2x/week) as above - the low frequency and afternoon-arrival/evening-return rotation rule out a same-day return
