Day trips from Cascais

Cascais sits at the end of the Linha de Cascais, the suburban rail line into Lisbon (Cais do Sodré), so Algés/Oeiras and central Lisbon are effectively a 15-35 min train ride, not a 'trip' at all — those events barely count as day trips. True day-trip range by car (own car or hire) extends to Vila Franca de Xira (~45-60 min via the A1, bypassing central Lisbon), Óbidos (~1h via A5/A8), Setúbal (~50 min-1h across the Ponte 25 de Abril/A2), and Évora (~1h35 via the A2/A6) — all comfortably there-and-back in a day. Events within Cascais/Estoril itself (e.g. the Rolex TP52 Worlds, Autódromo do Estoril) are excluded as home-jurisdiction.

music festival

NOS Alive 2026

Passeio Marítimo de Algés, Oeiras, PT

One of Europe's best-regarded riverside festivals, right on Cascais's own train line — 2026 headliners include Foo Fighters, Florence + The Machine and Twenty One Pilots, plus Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Lorde and Pixies

2026-07-09 to 2026-07-11 · best day Fri, 10 Jul 2026~20-25 min by train each way
Getting there: Take the Linha de Cascais train from Cascais to Algés (on the same line, closer to Cascais than central Lisbon), then a short walk along the riverfront to the festival site
⚠️ Sets run past midnight; trains on the Cascais line run late (last services around 1-1:30am), but they get very crowded straight after headline sets — allow time on the platform
cultural festival (bull-running)

Festa do Colete Encarnado (94th edition)

Vila Franca de Xira, PT

Portugal's biggest bull-running festival — campinos, street bull-runs, riverside concerts and a genuine slice of Ribatejo tauromachy culture, an hour from Cascais

2026-07-03 to 2026-07-05 · best day Sat, 4 Jul 2026~45-60 min by car each way
Getting there: Drive via the A1 north, bypassing central Lisbon, ~45-60 min; or train Cascais → Cais do Sodré → cross to Santa Apolónia/Oriente → suburban train to Vila Franca de Xira (~25-30 min once on that line), allow ~1.5h door to door
⚠️ Bull-runs (largadas) through the streets happen at set times through the day and are the main draw; evening concerts (Toy, D.A.M.A., Fernando Daniel headline 2026) run late, so a car is easier than chasing late trains back
cultural/historical festival

Mercado Medieval de Óbidos

Óbidos (walled town, inside and around the castle), PT

One of Europe's best medieval fairs — jousting, fire-eaters, a full period market and pageant inside a walled hilltop town; 2026's theme is D. Fernando and Leonor Teles

2026-07-16 to 2026-07-26 · best day Sat, 18 Jul 2026~1h each way
Getting there: Drive via A5 then A8, ~1h04 each way
⚠️ Market runs 5pm-11:55pm daily, so it's naturally an evening-into-night event; a comfortable drive home afterwards on the motorway
music/wine festival

EA Live Évora

Adega Cartuxa, Quinta de Valbom, Évora, PT

Big-name Portuguese acts (Xutos & Pontapés, Carminho, Paulo Gonzo, João Pedro Pais) plus Alentejo wine tastings at one of the region's great historic wineries — a proper Alentejo evening out

2026-07-09 to 2026-07-18 (six dates: 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 18 July) · best day Sat, 11 Jul 2026~1h35 each way
Getting there: Drive via A2/A6 across the Tagus, ~1h35 each way
⚠️ Evening concerts at a working winery outside the city — factor in the drive back after a late set, or make a night of it with a hotel booking
cultural/food festival

Feira de Sant'Iago

Parque Sant'Iago, Setúbal, PT

Setúbal's biggest annual festa — nightly concerts, Sesimbra/Setúbal seafood and crafts, themed 'Setúbal, Capital Natural' for 2026, with none of the crowding of the bigger Lisbon festivals

2026-07-23 to 2026-08-02 · best day Sat, 25 Jul 2026~50 min-1h each way
Getting there: Drive via the Ponte 25 de Abril and A2, ~50 min-1h each way
⚠️ Eleven nights of concerts on two stages plus regional food stalls; opening night headlined by Miguel Araújo — a straightforward evening-and-back by car
music festival (jazz)

Jazz em Agosto (42nd edition)

Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation gardens/auditorium, Lisbon, PT

One of Europe's most respected jazz festivals, in the Gulbenkian's superb garden amphitheatre — 14 concerts over the 42nd edition, an easy train hop from Cascais

2026-07-31 to 2026-08-09 · best day Wed, 5 Aug 2026~50 min-1h door to door each way
Getting there: Train Cascais → Cais do Sodré (~35-40 min) then metro/taxi to the Gulbenkian (Praça de Espanha, ~15 min)
⚠️ Evening concerts in the open-air amphitheatre; last Cascais-line trains run until around 1:30am so a late return is fine
major sport fixture (cycling)

Volta a Portugal em Bicicleta — final stage (individual time trial)

Praça do Império, Belém, Lisbon (traditional final-stage venue), PT

Portugal's Tour de France-equivalent grand tour crowns its champion right on Cascais's own train line, in the monumental Belém riverfront setting

2026-08-05 to 2026-08-16 (pattern; exact prologue/final-stage day has conflicting reports across sources) · best day Sat, 15 Aug 2026~15-20 min by train each way
Getting there: Train Cascais → Belém (on the Cascais line itself, several stops before Cais do Sodré), ~15-20 min
⚠️ The 87th edition's full stage-by-stage schedule wasn't finalised at time of research (some sources say the race runs 4-15 August, others 5-16 August) — the crowning individual time trial through Belém is the traditional closer, so check avoltaportugal.com nearer the date to pin the exact day
